Hat in Hand

I am a Black Woman. An intelligent Black Woman. An attractive Black Woman. A forward thinking Black Woman.

In my career, there are men. White men mostly, Black men, Indian men, men.

Regardless of the people in the room, I am a Black Woman. An intelligent Black Woman. An attractive Black Woman. A forward thinking Black Woman.

I speak and treat everyone the same. I don’t care about titles because we are all people, at work, to do a job.

Once those who don’t know me realize that I am not in the room to take notes, the ‘Who is this chick?’ look covers their faces.

My analysis, comments, questions, and suggestions take many of them by surprise. I speak with confidence and boldness. They expected a girl, not a woman, not a Black Woman.

I do not come ‘hat in hand’, seeking approval. Not today, not tomorrow, not at all. I come with knowledge, abilities, and focus to excel at the task presented.

I will not accept their labels of angry, aggressive, articulate, breath of fresh air, defensive, etc.

I am a Black Woman. An intelligent Black Woman. An attractive Black Woman. A forward thinking Black Woman. I am the rule, not the exception.
